This Date In Padres Baseball - April 5

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN!
Padres 8 Cardinals 7
Down 7-3 in the 9th, the Padres rallied for 5 runs against Lance Painter and closer Braden Looper (0-1) to give Trevor Hoffman (1-0) his first victory of the season after a rough 8th inning.

Quilvio Veras drove in Carlos Hernandez with a ground ball to second to tie the game at 3 apiece, Brian Boehringer was called in to hold the Cardinals. He did not.

Boehringer got Ray Lankford to fly out, then a double by Brian Jordan and a walk to Ran Gant to get Bruce Bochy off the top step and called in the closer Hoffman to prevent the tie from being broken. He could not, giving up 2 hits and walking a run in with the bases loaded before finally getting Mark McGwire to weakly ground out to end the bleeding at 4 runs.

In the 9th, Tony Gwynn led off with a single, then trotted him, courtesy of a 2-run HR by Ken Caminiti, his 2nd of the season. Now down 7-5. Wally Joyner would walk and that would be all for Painter. Closer Looper would fare no better, and walk Greg Vaughn. An error by Delino DeShields would load the bases for Chris Gomez. He would miss a grand slam by a few feet, but the sacrifice fly would narrow the score to 7-6 Cardinals.

Looper would uncork a wild pitch, allowing Vaughn to score and tie the game. With 2 outs and Hernandez on third, once again Veras would knock him again, this time with a single to left to take the lead 8-7.

Dan Miceli would close out the 9th, for his first save of the season.
