This Date In Padre Baseball - April 11

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN!
PADRES 7 DIAMONDBACKS 0

With the drama of the previous night still thick in the air, Saturday's tilt against Arizona lacked any drama and all the fun of a 5th straight win.

Pete Smith (1-1) went a solid 5 innings before turning it over to the bullpen, who allowed only 3 baserunners the rest of the game.

Quilvio Veras got the scoring started driving in Carlos Hernandez after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Tony Gwynn drove in Veras to make it 2-0. Ken Caminiti would drive a 2-1 pitch into the left field stands to bring the game to 5-0 Padres.

The Padres would tack on 2 more in the 5th to bring it to the eventual final of 7-0.

News and Notes - Carlos Reyes would make his Padre debut, throwing 2 scoreless innings. Bruce Bochy sees Reyes as an important bullpen piece.

Game 3 1990 Padres 3 Dodgers 1 First win of the season and the start of a 5 game winning streak, which would be the longest of a 75 win campaign.

GAME OF THE DATE!
Game 8 2000 Padres 3 Diamondbacks 2

In what would tie for the longest game of the season at 13 innings. It would happen 3 more times that season.
After a pitcher's duel between Arizona's Omar Daal and our own Matt Clement, backup 1B Ed Sprague would be the difference. Down 2-1 in the 9th, with Daal heading towards a complete game victory, Sprague hit the first pitch he saw for a game-tying home run to left.

Fast forward to the bottom of the 13th. When rallies fizzled in both the 11th and 12th innings with Phil Nevin striking out with runners on, we again turned to Ed Sprague.

Facing Russ Springer (1-1) , he homered for the second time of the game, this one a walk-off game winner over the fence in left-center field, giving the Padres(4-4) and Matt Whisenhunt (1-0) the win.
