This Date In Padres Baseball - April 8

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN!
PADRES 6 REDS 3

Avoiding any of the previous night's drama, the Padres jumped on the Reds and Gabe White (0-1) for 3 in the first, and held on from there.

Steve Finley hit a double to right, then move to third on a Tony Gwynn grounder to first. Ken Caminiti laced a single to right to score Finley, bringing up the slumping Greg Vaughn. SLUMP OVER! A very long, up over the big wall in right for a 2 run homer to bring the score to 3-0.

Andy Ashby (1-1) would collect the win with less than stellar stuff. He would repeatedly get himself into a jam, then back out over 6 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs.

With the score 4-3 Padres in the 7th, and the tying run on first, Bruce Bochy would call on Sterling Hitchcock to end the inning and reverse his own poor performance streak to the start of the season. The move worked, as Hitchcock struck out Dmitri Young to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 7th, Wally Joyner would extend the lead to 5-3 with a sacrifice fly scoring Andy Sheets. Finley would add another insurance run in the 8th with a single, scoring Greg Myers.

Trevor Hoffman would come on in the 9th to record his second save of the season.

News and Notes - Traded Marc Kroon to the Reds for minor league pitcher Buddy Carlye. Kroon had thrown a scoreless 2 1/3 innings this season.
