This Date In Padres Baseball - April 7

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN!
PADRES 3 REDS 2 (10 innings)

The home opener in front of 55,454 started off with a thud, and ended in thunderous applause!

Joey Hamilton struggled in the first, again, giving up 3 hits and a walk allowing 2 runs before escaping. But, he would only allow 2 more walks the next 6 innings keeping the Padres in the game. Pete Harnisch, who the Padres beat up in Cincinnati, looked like Cy Young today, throwing 8 strong inning, limiting the Padres to 4 hits and 2 walks.

Down 2-0 in the 9th and facing the Red's closer, Jeff Shaw (0-1), Wally Joyner would hit a one out single bringing up the struggling Greg Vaughn, who would strike out. With 2 outs and Joyner on first, the streaking Carlos Hernandez would lift an 0-1 pitch deep down the left field line for a game-tying 2 run HR.

Shaw would put 2 more runners on base before coercing Steve Finley into a shallow pop fly to left.

Trevor Hoffman (2-0) would come in the top of the 10th, despite the tie score, and struggle again. A single, a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch would put the go ahead run on 3rd. Hoffman would get Joe Nunnaly to pop out to Hernandez.

Tony Gwynn singled to center to open the bottom of the 10th. Joyner again singles, sending Gwynn to third. Once again, Vaughn would come to the plate with a chance to end it. This time, he lifted a ball to left, just deep enough to allow Gwynn to trot home with a walk-off home opener win!
