Staked to a 1-run lead, Andy Ashby (0-1) let it slip away in the 4th. Following a Joe Nunnaly single, Willie Greene slammed his 2nd HR of the series to give the Reds (1-2) a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 5th, the long ball would haunt Ashby again, this one a solo shot by Chris Stynes.
The Reds would tack on 2 more in the 8th of Sterling Hitchcock, thanks to him uncorking 2 wild pitches in the inning, for a final score of 5-1.

1970
Traded Billy McCool to the St. Louis Cardinals. Received Steve Huntz.
- P McCool came to the Padres in the expansion draft (Reds). He appeared in 54 games out of the bullpen. With a final record of 3-5 and a 4.30 ERA, McCool would be out of baseball following the 1970 season.
- IF Huntz played in 106 games hitting .219 with 11 HR and 37 RBI. He would be traded to the San Francisco Giants after the season, eventually finding his way back to the 1975 Padres, appearing in 22 more games, giving him a Padre total of .210 11 HR and 41 RBI.
1971
Purchased Mike Jackson from the Philadelphia Phillies.
- P Jackson wouldn't pitch for the Padres, being traded to Kansas City two weeks later.
1973
Signed Bob Miller as a free agent.
- P Miller appeared in 38 games for the 1973 Padres with a 7-3 record, 7 saves and a 1.41 ERA before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
1974
Signed Bob Barton as a free agent.
- C Barton signed on for one more year with Padres after originally playing from 1970-1972. Overall Barton appeared in 241 games hitting .233 with 9 HR and 53 RBI.
1980
Signed Danny Boone as a free agent.
- P Boone would appear in 47 games with a 2-0 record with 3 saves and a 3.40 ERA. He would move on to the Houston Astros in a June 1982 trade. He would slog through the minors for the next 7 seasons until returning to MLB in 1990 with the Baltimore Orioles.
1982
Signed Kurt Bevacqua as a free agent.
- 1975 Bubble Blowing Champ Bevacqua returns to the Padres after previously playing in 1979 & 1980. 1B/3B/OF would play through the 1985 season. Overall Bevacqua hit .245 with 7 HR and 128 RBI in 444 games as a Padre (good for 46th place on the all-time list.) But, he will always be remembered by Padres fans as the unlikely hero of the 1984 World Series,with his 3-run home run in the 5th inning of game 2, giving the Padres the lead, eventually winning their one and only World Series game. Batting as the DH, Bevacqua hit .412 with 2 HR and 4 RBI.
1987
Signed Luis Salazar as a free agent.
Signed Luis Salazar as a free agent.
- Utility man Salazar made his MLB debut for the 1980 Padres. He appeared in 525 games from 1980-1984 before being traded to the White Sox. His return would only last the 1987 season, hitting .254 with 3 HR and 17 RBI. Traded back to the Padres in 1989 for another 95 games hitting .268 with 8 HR and 22 RBI. Overall Salazar would end up on the Padre all-time leader-board:

Released Roger Smithberg.
- P Smithberg was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2nd round of the 1987 amateur draft. He would top out at AAA Las Vegas before his release. He would make his MLB debut with Oakland in 1993.
1993
Selected Phil Clark off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.
- 1B/OF Clark would appear in 238 games from 1993-1995, hitting .263 with 16 HR and 60 RBI before his release at the end of the 1995 season.
1994
Released Eric Gunderson.
- P Gunderson was invited to Spring Training, but didn't make the roster. He would land in New York with the Mets.
2009
Traded Chad Reineke to the Oakland Athletics. Received a player to be named later. The Oakland Athletics sent Danny Putnam (July 8, 2009) to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade.
- P Reineke appeared in 4 games in 2008. Finished with a 2-1 record with a 5.00 ERA.
- OF Putnam would play in the minors in 2009 before his release.
2012
Released Dennis Tankersley.
- P Tankersly appeared in 27 games during his 3 year stretch with the Padres from 2002-2004. He had lifetime record of 1-10 and a 7.61 ERA.

- P Guthrie, a 12-year MLB vet, would spend the first half of 2016 at AAA, before his release in June.
2017
Released Brett Wallace.
- 1B/3B Wallace releases after a poor spring. After signing as a free agent in 2015 and hitting an impressive .302 in 64 games, his 2016 was equally unimpressive, hitting .189 in 119 games. His career as a Padre would total .224 with 13 HR and 36 RBI.
2019
Traded Socrates Brito to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Rodrigo Orozco (minors).
- OF Brito was selected off waivers just 5 days earlier, being introduced at Opening Day 2019, but never appeared in a game as a Padre.
- OF Orozco spent 2019 split between AA Amarillo and AAA El Paso. He was slotted to start 2020 at AAA.
