This Date In Padres Baseball - April 23

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES WIN AT WRIGLEY!

Padres 4 Cubs 1

Andy Ashby (3-1) pitched a strong 8 innings, littering 7 hits across the box score, walking 1 and striking out 4 for the victory. Reliable Dan Miceli proved that ballplayers are human too, giving up a towering home run to Sammy Sosa, then a single to Mark Grace before Bochy lurched out of the bullpen. Taking extra time to allow his closer, Trevor Hoffman to warm, finally took the ball out of Miceli's glove and called in Hoffman. Trevor did what Trevor does, setting down the Cubs in order to get save number 6 of the season.

Ken Caminiti led off the second with his 7th HR of the season, and Chris Gomez doubled in Wally Joyner later in the inning to give Ashby a 2 run cushion. Cammy would get his 2nd RBI of the day the easy way, being walked with the bases loaded.

Pinch hitting for a tiring Ashby in the 9th, struggling Mark Sweeney connected on a deep home run to left for his first of the year. That run had Bochy get Miceli up in the bullpen and have Trevor sit down, no longer in a save situation. Hence the little one man show in delaying removing Miceli in the 9th.

News and Notes - At 16-4, this is the best record through 20 games in franchise history. Signed minor league free agent Roberto Ramirez.
