THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES WIN!
Padres 10 Reds 9
Thanks to a 7-run 6th inning, the Padres (2-0) were able to climb back from a 5-0 hole in the first, to gift Joey Hamilton (1-0) his first win of the season. Hamilton would allow 6 runs to score on 7 hits and a walk in the first 2 innings alone. Manager Bruce Bochy would send the 4th year pro back out there and Hamilton would settle down, allowing one more hit before yielding in the 5th to Dan Miceli.
A Ken Caminiti home run in the second, put the Padres on the board and a 2 run shot by Steve Finley in the 3rd cut the Reds (0-2) lead to 6-3.
The outburst in the 7th started innocently enough when Finley walked after falling behind 0-2 to Pete Harnisch. A Tony Gwynn single sent Finley to third with Caminiti up. After getting Caminiti to line to third, Harnisch was relieved by Gabe White, who promptly gave up a single to Wally Joyner driving home Finley to make it 6-4 Reds. Another pitching change brought in Scott Sullivan, and that is when the fun began for the Padres.
A single by Greg Vaughn loaded the bases for back-up catcher Greg Myers. Myers smacked a game changing double, scoring Gwynn and Joyner. Vaughn would come around to score on an error by right-fielder Jon Nunnally to give the Padres a 7-6.
But the Padres were not done yet, Chris Gomez would double next to score Myers, making it 8-6. With 2 outs, Finley came around to bat again, this time he singled to center scoring Gomez and Quilvio Veras to bring the score to 10-6.

In the bottom of the 7th, the combo of Miceli, Sterling Hitchcock, and Brian Boehringer stumbled, allowing 3 runs to give the Reds (0-2) hope, down only 10-9.
But Trevor Hoffman would end that hope, striking out 2, recording his first save of 1998.
