This Date In Padres Baseball - April 17

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN

PADRES 7 PIRATES 5

In a back and forth battle for the first 5 innings, with both starters scuffling, the game turned on a 2-run longball courtesy of Greg Vaughn, his 5th of the season.

Brian Boehringer (2-1) picked up the win with great 3 innings taking over for struggling starter, Joey Hamilton. Boehringer gave up only 2 hits while striking out 3 Pirates.

It would take both Dan Miceli and Sterling Hitchcock to get through the 8, but they handed the lead over to Trevor Hoffman, who knocked down the Pirates 1-2-3 for his 4th save of the year.

News and Notes - Hitchcock, starting to find his role in the pen, induced a pop out with runners on 2nd and 3rd on just 2 pitches.

GAME OF THE DATE

GAME  2008 - Rockies 2 Padres 1 in 22 innings (LONGEST GAME IN FRANCHISE HISTORY)

Jake Peavy pitched a brilliant 8 innings, striking out 11 and allowing only 4 hits, but the Padres bats were equally squashed by Jeff Francis and the Rockies. A scoreless game until the 14th inning, when the Rockies walked in the first run of the game on a bases loaded free pass from Kevin Cameron.

But the Padres finally had an offensive outburst, with Josh Bard coming through after Khalil Greene was intentionally walked to load the bases. Bard's single to center scored Kevin Kouzmanoff to tie the game and reload the bases. Paul McNaulty and Colt Morton both ground out weakly to third to force even more baseball....nearly another full game!

In the 22nd inning, Troy Tulowitzki doubled home Willy Taveras, who was only on base because of a throwing error by Khalil Greene.

Adding injury to insult, Greene would be hit by pitch, and then get hit in the face sliding into second, attempting to break up a double play, unsuccessfully.

With no bats left on the bench, Kip Gross struck out Glendon Rusch to end the game with the tying run aboard.

With a game time of 6 hours and 16 minutes, it ended after 1 am San Diego time.
