THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES WIN
PADRES 1 @GIANTS 0
Kevin Brown doesn't like losing streaks. Once again pitching like the ace he is, a day after a Padre loss, he ends a Padre losing streak at 1. This time, he did it all himself, hurling a 4 hit complete game shutout over the Giants in 3Com Park on a crisp 55 degree night.
A Greg Vaughn solo shot in the 2nd inning, his 4th of the year, and 3rd in two days, was all the Brown would need. Not allowing a runner to third until the bottom of the 9th, Brown had the Giants guessing all game. He mixed all his pitches into 8 strikeouts and a lot of weak contact.
In the 9th, however, he was rudely greeted by Stan Javier's double to deep left field, bouncing at the warning track, just a few feet from a tie game. A sacrifice would move him to 3rd with one out. Bill Muller would ground out sharply to second, freezing Javier at third, bringing up Barry Bonds. With Trevor Hoffman still warming up in the bullpen, manager Bruce Bochy made a mound visit, with Brown clearly in charge of the conversation.
Bochy left Brown in, and returned to the top step of the dugout. Brown intentionally walked Bonds, to no one's surprise, to face J.T. Snow. Brown would overpower Snow for his 8th strikeout of the game, completing his shutout.
News and Notes - Kevin Brown accounted for 1/3 of the Padres hits, going 3 for 4 on the evening.
