This Date In Padres Baseball - April 18

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

PADRES WIN

PADRES 7 PIRATES 5 (10 innings)

Padres win for the second night in a row by the same score, 7-5. Yet, this time it took an extra inning to get the job done, making Dan Miceli (2-0) a winner.

Down 5-3 in the 8th, the Padres once again mount a comeback in an early season trend. Scoring twice more in the 10th before calling on Trevor Hoffman to nail down the victory with his 5th save.

Andy Ashby was not his normal steady hand on the mound, allowing 11 hits in 6 innings. Giving up 3 in the 3rd after a Turner Ward double and an error by Andy Sheets. The Padres would respond right away with a Wally Joyner double driving home Tony Gwynn for the first run for the Friars.

Andy Sheets would make up for his error by driving a Estaban Loiza fastball over the left field fence to make the score 3-2. Ashby wouldn't get help once again in the bottom of the 5th, when Ken Caminiti dropped an easy flyball from Jason Kendall, who would eventually come around to score, making it 4-2 Pirates (7-11).

Once again, Wally Joyner would bring the Padres back to within one run, hitting his 3rd HR of the season in the 6th. And once again, Ashby couldn't keep Kendall from creating another run for the Pirates, extending the lead to 5-3.

Coming up clutch in the 8th, Carlos Hernandez would hit a 2 out, 2 run HR to tie the game, 5-5.

Sloppy play would now infect the hometown Pirates, with a passed ball and two errors by 3B Doug Strange, first booting an easy grounder, allowing Greg Vaughn to score. Then throwing the ball into right field attempting to get Chris Gomez at second, allowing pinch runner Ed Giavanola to score.

Trevor would set down the Pirates in order to secure the Padre victory!

News and Notes - Bruce Bochy did not announce that Mark Langston was headed to the disabled list, saying instead, that the Padres will make that decision before his next start.
