THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES SNAP 2 GAME SLIDE
PADRES 7 CUBS 3
Ashby picked 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, before handing the ball to Sterling Hitchcock, who pitched 2 scoreless innings for his first save of the season, and only the 3rd of his career.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Padres responded with 2 of their own. Singles by Quilvio Veras and Gwynn, followed up by a walk to Ken Caminiti left the bases loaded for Greg Vaughn who singled home Veras. Mark Sweeney would then single home Gwynn to make it 2-1 Padres.
Gwynn would get his second hit in as many innings, driving Veras in to extend the score to 3-1, but Ashby had a shaky 3rd, giving up 2 runs to tie the game. But that would be the last hiccup by Ashby, who would allow only one more hit the rest of the night.
In the bottom of the 5th, Gwynn would get his third consecutive single, sending Steve Finley from first to third. Finley would score on a sac fly by Caminiti to break the tie. Carlos Hernandez would double home Gwynn to make the score 5-3.
After singling again in the 6th, Gwynn would come up in the 8th for his chance at his 9th career 5 hit game. He would not disappoint, driving a ball into the RF stands to bring the final score to 7-3.
News and Notes - Wally Joyner missed another game, and now the training staff is thinking it might be a few more days until he is back in the lineup.
