1998 SEASON

Off day for the Padres, after a successful 4-2 opening week road trip, they happily find themselves heading home to the Q for the home opener on April 7 against the Reds. Taking 2 of 3 against the Reds in the opening series, the Reds look for revenge. Joey Hamilton takes the mound for the home opener of the season, once again facing off against Pete Harnisch. Both hope for a better performance on the mound, as each lasted only 5 1/3 giving up 5+ runs.

Game 7 - 2003 Padres host the Dodgers

Dodgers beat the Padres 4-3 in 13 innings, in what would be the longest game of the 2003 season.

Jaret Wright, the 6th Padre pitcher of the day, walked one and gave up 2 hits leading to the last run of the game.


Game 2 - 2005 Padres at Rockies

After scoring 10 and losing on a walk-off on Opening Day, the Padres bats stayed hot and defeated the Rockies 14-6 behind a 5 RBI game from Brian Giles. The 14 runs would represent a season high for 2005 for a team that would average 4.2 per game.

Transactions of April 6

1981
Traded a player to be named later to the New York Yankees. Received Byron Ballard (minors). The San Diego Padres sent Dave Stegman (April 30, 1981) to the New York Yankees to complete the trade.

  • P Ballard was at A ball Greensboro for the Yankees in 1980. He would spend 1981 in AA Amarillo before a trade to the Mets in 1982.
  • OF Stegman spent 1981 at AAA Hawaii after coming over in a trade from Detroit in Dec 1980.

1985
Traded Mitch Williams to the Texas Rangers. Received Randy Asadoor.

  • P Williams drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 8th round of the 1982 amateur draft, and selected by Texas in the Rule 5 draft in 1985. He was returned and the trade was worked out. He was a starter in the minors for the Padres, before Texas would turn him into a reliever, and then he became "Wild Thing" 
  • 2B/3B Asadoor would hit .364 with 0 HR and 7 RBI in 15 games during a September call up. That would be the totality of his MLB career.

2006
Signed Ricky Gutierrez as a free agent.

  • IF Gutierrez played 11 games for AAA Portland before his release. This was his second stint with the Padres, playing in 223 games, hitting .247 with 6 HR and 54 RBI from 1993-1994. He finished 11th in the ROY voting in 1993.
2018
Traded a player to be named later to the Texas Rangers. Received Brett Nicholas. The San Diego Padres sent Emmanuel Clase (May 7, 2018) to the Texas Rangers to complete the trade.

  • P Clase appeared in 31 games for the Padres organization at rookie and A levels. Would make his MLB debut with the Rangers in 2019
  • C Nicholas would play in 117 games at AAA El Paso in 2018. He would be released after the season.
