The San Diego Padres (3-1) jumped all over the previously unbeaten Cardinals (2-1), scoring 6 in the first off Manny Aybar (0-1) and not looking back in the series opener.
RBI singles by Tony Gwynn and Wally Joyner followed by RBI doubles by Greg Myers and Mark Langston to get to a 6-0 lead was all Langston (1-0) would need this night, barely.
Langston had his own troubles, struggling to get through 5 to get the victory. He gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks.
Fortunately for him, the Padres bats were hot, collecting 13 hits, with every started except Steve Finley getting on the board.
Up 7-2 in the 4th, backup catcher Greg Myers hit a a single to left, scoring Gywnn and Joyner to make it 9-2.
Hot bat of the day, Myers, drove in one more in the 6th, driving in Gwynn on a fielder's choice.
In the top of the 9th, the Padres added 3 more, with Gwynn getting his third hit and scoring his fourth run of the game.

Traded Walt Hriniak to the Atlanta Braves. Received Richard Wilson (minors).
- C Hriniak was traded to San Diego from the Braves in 1969. He would appear in 31 games, hitting .227 with 0 HR and 1 RBI. He would spend the rest of his career in the minors.
- RP Wilson was a AA player who never reported to Padre camp and was out of baseball.
1975
Signed Randy Hundley as a free agent.
- C Hundley hit .206 with 2 HR and 14 RBI in 74 games. He would purchased by the Cubs before the 1976 season.
Purchased Hector Torres from the Chicago White Sox.
- MIF Torres played in 186 games from 1975-1976 before being traded to the Cleveland Indians. He hit .235 with 9 HR and 41 RBI.
1985
Traded Joe Lansford to the Oakland Athletics. Received Tim Pyznarski.
- 1B Lansford played in 25 games for the 1982 & 1983 Padres. He hit .200 with 1 HR and 5 RBI.
- 1B Pyznarski would make his MLB debut with the 1986 Padres. Hit .238 with 0 HR and 0 RBI before being traded to Milwaukee after the season.

- Utility infielder Moore was at A ball Lake Elsinore. He wouldn't get above AA in his career.
