This Date In Padres Baseball - April 24

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES DROP OPENER

PIRATES 4 PADRES 2

After a successful 6-2 road trip, the Padres returned to Mission Valley for a quick 5 game home stand against 2 of the same teams they just visited, Pittsburgh and Chicago.

On the mound for the Padres, Pete Smith (1-2), subbing for an ailing Mark Langston , ran into trouble in the 6th, allowing all 3 batters he faced to record a hit. Jason Kendall's double scoring Tony Womack and Al Martin would be the last batter of the night for Smith. Carlos Reyes would allow Kendall to score, closing  the book on Smith at 5 IP and 3 runs allowed.

Although Smith pitched well early, the Padres bats couldn't string enough hits together against Pirates starter Jason Schmidt (3-1), scoring once in the 2nd, and once more in the 6th.

In the second, Greg Vaughn popped a ball down the right field line, with RF Jose Guillen playing him to pull, found safe passage just to left of the foul line. The ball scooted towards the corner, and in a rare showing of speed, Vaughn chugged his way to his first triple since 1996. A high throw by 1B Kevin Young into the stands allowed Vaughn to walk on home for the first run of the game.

After the three run outburst in the top of the 6th,the 1998 Padres (in a wonderful recurring theme so far) would fight back with one of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Steve Finley, having some good at bats, without anything to show for it recently, showed a little sign of life roping a double to the wall, missing a game tying home run by a few feet. This scored James Mouton, a surprise starter in play of Tony Gwynn, from first to bring the Padres to within 1.

That was the end of the Padres offense, however, as the Pirate relievers would set down the next 10 hitters in a row to end the game.

News and Notes -  When asked about the surprise start by Mouton, manager Bruce Bochy replied " Tony's knee didn't feel so hot after the flight home, so a day off seemed right. We will see #19 in the lineup tomorrow."
