PADRES USE 3 RUN 5TH TO BEAT EX-PADRE BENES
PADRES 6 DIAMONDBACKS 4
The Padres survived a 14 hit barrage by the Diamonbacks, knocking 12 hits of their own to defeat the D'backs in the desert, 6-4.
Starter Sterling Hitchcock had a rough outing, lasting only 4 innings, allowing 3 runs. leaving the game trailing 3-1. Slowly heating up Steve Finley, now on simmer, tripled to drive in Eddie Williams and Quilvio Veras. A sacrifice fly from Tony Gwynn would score Finley to make the score 4-3 Padres.
In the 7th, the same 2 hitters would strike again, this time a double by Finley to score Veras, and then a single by Gwynn to score Finley to make the score 6-3.
Brian Boehringer would be greeted rudely by a long home run by Matt Williams to bring the D'backs one run closer. He would settle down until the bottom of the 8th, allowing a walk and a 2 out single to bring Williams back to the plate, this time as the go-ahead run.
Bruce Bochy would call on closer Trevor Hoffman to get the big slugger out, which he did on a lazy pop fly to left-fielder Greg Vaughn. Hoffman would work around a 2 out single in the 9th for his 15th straight save.
News and Notes - 5 Padres had a multi-hit game, with Steve Finley having a much needed 3 hit game.

The doubleheader loss wasn't the worst news of the day for the now 16-31 Padres. It was that owner C. Arnholt Smith agrees to sell the Padres to Washington, D.C., supermarket magnate Joseph Danzansky. Until Ray Kroc stepped in, the Padres were on the move. It was so certain that it forced Topps baseball card company to issue cards that looked like this:
Game 48 1994 - Padres 8 Cardinals 6 - On May 27th, the 1994 Padres were already 20 games under .500! But today started the longest winning streak of the season, 6 games. They would play .500 ball the rest of the strike shortened season.
Game 54 2018 - @Dodgers 6 Padres 1
My son's first game at Dodger stadium was not a great one for the Padres. The Friars went Johnny Wholestaff, with Matt Strahm and Adam Cimber thowing 2 innings each, then Kazuhisa Makita going 3 before Tyler Webb was lit up for 4 runs in the 8th to put the game out of reach. But any time at the ballpark, especially with my son, is a good time.
