This Date In Padres Baseball - May 2

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON
PADRES HOLD ON FOR THE W!

Padres 8 Marlins 7

Up 8-3 after 5, the Padres held on for the victory, and avoid their 2nd 2 game losing streak of the year.

Trevor Hoffman pitched a scoreless 9th for his 8th save of the season, making a winner out of Joey Hamilton (3-1) who pitched the minimum 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks. Not his best outing of the year, but the hitters gave him 8 runs to play with.

The first 4 batters reached (Quilvio Veras-single, Steve Finley-single, Tony Gwynn-E5, Wally Joyner-single) to put 2 on the board before an out was recorded. By the end of the second however, Hamilton had given up a home run to Cliff Floyd, tying the game at 2.

In the 3rd, the Padres' bats were afire again, plating 4 on RBI singles by Greg Vaughn, Chris Gomez, and 2 RBI single by Veras to extend the score to 6-2.

Finley's second hit of the day would drive in Gomez and Veras to make it 8-3 Padres.

After Hamilton let the first 2 Marlins on base in the 6th, Bochy called on Carlos Reyes to quell the rally. Instead. Reyes couldn't escape after getting 2 quick outs, with Edgar Renteria crushing a fastball into the left field stands, making the score 8-6.

Defensive replacement, James Mouton, made a terrible error in the 8th, allowing Craig Counsell to score from second, to bring the Marlins fans hope for a comeback.

Trevor would see that no rally would happen, securing the 20th win of the season.

News and Notes - Mouton's error, although his first of the year, is a concerning trend for Mouton. His defense is the main reason he is on the roster, and it will remain to be seen how long he stays on.
