LEYRITZ SHINES IN PADRE DEBUT
PADRES 5 MARINERS 3
New Padre Jim Leyritz provided the early offense, hitting 2 doubles and driving in 3 runs to stake the Padres to a 3-0 lead.
Sterling Hitchcock could only get through 6 innings, a little wild, walking 5 and needing 91 pitches to get through the 6 innings. But, he only allowed 2 hits, and a single run on a home run by Alex Rodriguez.
Donne Wall got 2 outs in the 7th, then was replaced by Dan Miceli to face Alex Rodriguez, who promptly double off the wall, to score tie and even the score.
With 2 men on and Leyritz on deck, chomping at the bit to add to his RBI total, Jeff Fassero (5-5) would challenge Ruben Rivera, and he would respond with a double to left, scoring Tony Gwynn and Ken Caminiti to take the lead 5-3.
Trevor Hoffman would set down the Mariners in order to secure the victory and his 23rd consecutive save.
News and Notes - With the Braves losing today, the Padres are now tied for the best record in the NL.
