Down 4-1 in the 7th, the Padres staged a rally, drawing 2 walks, and with 2 out, Gwynn singled to drive in Chris Gomez to cut the lead to 4-2. Caminiti would strike out with runners on the corners.

Colbert was the first Padre to hit three home runs in a game. His 22 total bases are a still-standing Padres doubleheader along with the five homers and 13 RBIs.
