Mark Langston (4-4) struggled through 3 innings, allowing 3 runs and the Padres offense was held to 5 hits.

Ken Caminiti drove in Tony Gwynn in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead, but Langston couldn't get around Vladimir Guerrero who doubled home 2 runs to take the lead.

Down 4-1 in the 7th, the Padres staged a rally, drawing 2 walks, and with 2 out, Gwynn singled to drive in Chris Gomez to cut the lead to 4-2. Caminiti would strike out with runners on the corners.

No Padre got on base in the last 2 innings.

First baseman Nate Colbert hit five home runs and drove in 13 runs as the Padres swept a doubleheader in Atlanta. The five home runs tied a doubleheader record set by Hall of Famer Stan Musial in 1954 for the St. Louis Cardinals. The 13 RBIs set a since-tied Major League record. Colbert was the first Padre to hit three home runs in a game. His 22 total bases are a still-standing Padres doubleheader along with the five homers and 13 RBIs.

Purchased Chris Cannizzaro from the Houston Astros.
  •  C Cannizzaro returns to San Diego for 26 more games during the 1974 season. Released after the season, completing his Padre career with 292 games over 4 seasons, hitting .238 with 10 HR and 87 RBI.
