Right-hander Kevin Brown allows five hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout as the Padres defeat the Phillies 4–0 at Qualcomm Stadium. Brown (14–3) ties a Padres record with an 11th straight win.

Carlos Hernandez led off the scoring with a double down the first base line, scoring Wally Joyner all the way from 1st base for an early 1-0 lead after 2 innings.

With Brown cruising, the Padre hitters put up 3 in the 5th inning to put the game safely in Friar hands. Kevin Brown led off with a double, and scored on a Steve Finley single. Quilvio Veras would come around to score on a fielder's choice that Tony Gwynn at first. Clearly limping on the run to first, Bruce Bochy quickly put Ruben Rivera in as a pinch runner. He would come around to score on a Joyner single to make it 4-0 Padres.

Brown finished strong, allowing only one more hit over the last 4 innings, striking out 4.

Traded a player to be named later and Kurt Bevacqua to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Received Rick Lancellotti and Luis Salazar.
  •  3B Bevacqua, acquired from the Texas Rangers via a trade in 1978, would eventually sign as a free agent in 1982. Overall he appeared in 444 games over 6 seasons, hitting 7 HR and 128 RBI. Hit .412 with 2 HR in the 1984 World Series.

  •  P Lyles, signed as a free agent in 2017, appeared in 29 games (13 starts) over 2 seasons, posting a 3-7 record with a 5.53 ERA.
Tyson Ross selected by the St. Louis Cardinals off waivers.
  • P Ross, a 2014 All-Star with the Padres had most recently signed as a free agent in 2017. Made 22 starts during the 2018 season before being waived. Overall in his Padre career he appeared in 122 games (103 starts) posting a 32-44 record with a 3.40 ERA including 3 complete games and 1 shut out.
