This Date In Padre Baseball - August 25

      THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Padres 5 Phillies 3

Kevin Brown (17-4) tossed 7 innings, allowing 3 runs, in earning his 17th win of the season. Trevor Hoffman walked 2, but kept the Phillies from scoring in locking down his 42nd save of the season.

Facing Curt Schilling (12-12) the Padres knew they would need to strike early as Schilling has had early inning struggles all season. In the second inning, the Padres did just that, stringing together 3 hits and a walk to score 2, then added a third from the bat of Kevin Brown himself.

Ken Caminiti hit his 26th home run of the year in the 5th to extend the lead to 4-1. That extra run was needed, as Gregg Jeffries blasted a 2 run home run in the 6th to bring the Phillies back to within one run.

In the top of the 9th, Ken Caminiti struck again, hitting a deep fly into the second deck of Veterans Stadium to give the Padres the final score of 5-3.

News and Notes - Dan Miceli, called on in the 8th to keep the heart of the Phillies order in check, did just that, getting 3 quick out on just 10 pitches.
