This Date In Padre Baseball - August 10

  THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Marlins 3 Padres 2

Kevin Brown (14-4) once again gives up a first inning run, this time on an error by second baseman Ed Giovanola, and pitched decently enough to win, but the Padres offense was again mysteriously quiet.

Only RBI singles by Chris Gomez in the 4th, and Carlos Hernandez in the 6th were allowed by Marlin's starter Livan Hernandez (10-8), who only allowed 5 hits in the complete game victory.

GM Kevin Towers must be concerned about the occasional disappearance act of the Padre offense. He is also concerned about the health of Quilvio Veras and Tony Gwynn, both missing time again.

News and Notes -  At Qualcomm Stadium, Harry Wendelstedt and his son, Hunter, become the first father-son combination to umpire a major league baseball game together. Dad is behind the plate calling balls and strikes, and his son, who will remain on the same crew for the remainder of the season, makes the calls at third base when the last-place Marlins beat the first place Padres, 3-2.
