THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
PADRES 6 MARLINS 3 (13 INNINGS)
Newcomer Randy Myers blows his first save, wasting a solid effort by Andy Ashby, who allowed 2 runs on 7 1/3 innings.
Steve Finley broke up a 2-2 tie with single in the 5th to score Quilvio Veras, and the 3-2 score stayed until the 9th inning. Randy Myers, and not Trevor Hoffman, came out of the pen to save the game. It didn't go as planned.
A lead-off walk to Gregg Zaun, quickly replaced by speedy Luis Castillo in a forceout, escalated quickly. John Wehner executed a great bunt that Ken Caminiti couldn't quite handle, moving Castillo to second. Pinch hitter Dave Berg would single to left, and Castillo raced home and beat the throw to tie the game. A wild pitch later, and the Marlins had both runners in scoring position, forcing Bruce Bochy to intentionally walk Edgar Renteria to load the bases.
Myers would get Mark Kotsay to hit a shallow fly, then Myers was pulled in favor of Dan Miceli, who got the final out.
Catcher Carlos Hernandez hits a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 13th to give the Padres a 6–3 win over the Florida Marlins at Qualcomm Stadium.
News and Notes - Trevor Hoffman was unavailable after a 2 inning out the previous night.
