THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Dodgers 3 Padres 2
The drive up Interstate 5 did nothing to help the bats awake...ok, maybe not nothing, as 8 hits were recorded, just not enough of them in the same inning to create some runs.
Joey Hamilton (13-13) had a quality start, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings, but the offense couldn't muster enough to earn him the victory.
The Padres took a brief lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Chris Gomez to score Wally Joyner.
Hamilton surrendered a 3-run home run to Adrian Beltre in the 4th inning to give the Dodgers all the runs that Chan Ho Park (14-9) would need.
In the 8th against a tiring Park, John Vander Wal and Quilvio Veras hit back-to-back doubles to bring the Padres within a run. Jeff Shaw would allow 2 hits in the 9th, but held firm for his 45th save.
News and Notes - The Astros also lost, leaving the Padres mathematically in the race for the #2 seed. Realistically though, the Padres are staring down a matchup with the Astros and the ace acquired at the deadline, Randy Johnson.
