1998 SEASON

Rockies 11 Padres 5

Todd Helton goes 4 for 4, and Vinny Castilla hits his 40th and 41st home run of the year on his way to a 6 RBI game.

Sterling Hitchcock was no match for the thin air, tossing 4 2/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 5 runs. Scott Sanders fared much worse, lasting only 1 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs all unearned.

The Padres offense started strong, but again fizzled out. George Arias singled home Quilvio Veras and Ken Caminiti for the first runs. In the 2nd inning, Veras tripled to score Chris Gomez, then scored on a double by Caminiti. 

Veras would play a part in the last Padre run as well, scoring on a line drive out by Greg Vaughn in the 6th.

The Baltimore Orioles sent Ricky Gutierrez to complete the trade of August 31st.
  • IF Gutierrez would make his MLB debut as a Padre on April 13, 1993 and go on to appear in 223 games over 2 seasons, hitting 6 HR and 54 RBI. Traded by the San Diego Padres with Derek Bell, Doug Brocail, Pedro Martinez, Phil Plantier and Craig Shipley to the Houston Astros for a player to be named later, Ken Caminiti, Andujar Cedeno, Steve Finley, Roberto Petagine and Brian Williams on December 28, 1994.

2002

Released Trent Hubbard.
  • OF Hubbard, signed as a free agent on February 24, appeared in 89 games during the 2002 season, hitting .209 with 1 HR and 7 RBI.
