THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Rockies 1 Padres 0 (11 innings)
The Padre offense again is nowhere to be found, completely wasting a brilliant performance by Kevin Brown - 9 innings, 8 strikeouts, 4 hits and no runs.
Daryl Kile (13-16) matched Brown zero for zero, tossing 10 innings of 3 hit ball as the Padre offense sputtered at home.
Quilvio Veras doubled on the first pitch he saw leading off the first, a hopeful signal that turned out to be a mirage, as he was the first and only Padre to reach second all game long.
In a scoreless tie in the 11th, after Dan Miceli gave up a loud out to Jason Bates, Bruce Bochy turned to Randy Myers (4-6) who allowed 2 hits and the winning run.
News and Notes - With the loss and the Braves victory in Arizona, the Padres have been mathematically eliminated from earning the #1 seed in the NL. The Astros also won, moving their magic number to 2 for locking up home field as the #2 seed.
