This Date In Padre Baseball - September 29

                  THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Padres 2 Astros 1

Kevin Brown dominates the Astros in Houston as the Padres steal game 1 on the road.

Brown struck out 16 in 8 innings and Trevor Hoffman worked around a lead off double and an error by Ken Caminiti to allow an unearned run to earn the save.

The Padres first run came in the 6th inning. Tony Gwynn led off with a double, followed by consecutive singles by Greg Vaughn and Caminiti. Jim Leyritz supplied a deep sacrifice fly, missing a grand slam by a few feet.

In the 8th, Vaughn provided some much needed insurance with a deep drive down the left field line that just stayed fair.
