THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
THE PADRES CLINCH THE NL WEST!
Padres 8 Dodgers 7
Stan Spencer has his worst start of his short career so far, allowing 7 runs in 5 innings to put the Padres in a 7-0 hole.
The Padre offense responded. Wally Joyner led off the 5th with a solo shot, and Chris Gomez doubled to score Greg Myers and Andy Sheets to bring the Padres closer.
In the bottom of the sixth, Dave Mlicki gave up a single to Greg Vaughn, then walked Ken Caminiti, Joyner, and Greg Myers to push across a run to make it 7-4.
Sean Maloney replaced Mlicki and promptly hit Andy Sheets to push another run across to make it 7-5 Dodgers. Gomez would then draw a walk to score yet another run, making it 7-6.
Quilvio Veras, facing the 3rd Giant pitcher of the inning, Jeff Kubenka, drove a ball to deep left, for a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 7. 2 outs later, with the bases still loaded, the Padre who started off the inning with a single, Greg Vaughn, laced another single, scoring Andy Sheets. With 60,823 fans screaming their heads off, Chris Gomez was tagged out at home, but the damage was done and the Padres now held an 8-7 lead, and clinching the division now just 3 innings away.
In the 7th, Donne Wall walked 2 of the 3 batters he faced, forcing manager Bruce Bochy to make a change, bringing in Mark Langston for his first relief appearance since 1986. Langston induced a ground ball from Matt Luke, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd, and getting the 2nd out of the inning.
Playing playoff baseball, Bochy made another swap, bringing in Dan Miceli who struck out Matt Grudzielanek to the massive roar from the crowd. Miceli set down the Dodgers in order in the 8th.
Hells Bells blared over the PA at Qualcomm Stadium, and Trevor Hoffman jogged out of the bullpen and the crowd drowned out the music, and everyone was on their feet for the 9th in the hopes that the Padres could clinch the division tonight, after knowing the Giants lost earlier in the day.
News and Notes - The Padres are heading to the postseason for only the 2nd time in franchise history.
