Kevin Brown (18-7) had just one poor inning, a 4 run 7th, and again the Padre offense sputtered to only 2 runs.

Sitting on a one run lead thanks to a solo home run by Quilvio Veras in the 7th, Brown surrendered 5 of his 9 hits, including a 2 run home run by Mark Grace, to cough up the lead.

Wally Joyner doubled in Greg Vaughn in the 9th to give some hope. but Rod Beck came in and shut down the Padre rally for his 47th save of the season.

The San Diego Padres sent Dale Thayer to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to complete the trade of August 24
  • P Thayer, signed as an amateur free agent on September 25, 2002, and pitched at AAA Portland at the time of the trade. Re-acquired as a free agent in 2011, he appeared in 241 games over 4 seasons, posting a 11-14 record with a 3.19 ERA including 8 saves. Granted free agency after the 2015 season.
