              THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Diamondbacks 6 Padres 3

The Padres drop the opener of the last 3 game series of the year, being walked off on Yamil Benitez 3 run home run in the bottom of the 9th off Randy Myers.

With playoff seedings finalized, the Padres opted to only have starter Kevin Brown toss 5 innings to give some rest before his Game 1 start in the NLDS. Tied at 2 after 8 innings, the Padres hit first in the top half, with Ken Caminiti doubling, then Andy Sheets was brought in to run. And it paid off, with pinch hitter Mark Sweeney singling to center to score Sheets. But no further damage could be done.

In the bottom half, deciding to rest Hoffman some more, Bochy turned to Randy Myers (4-7) and watched as he Myers struck out Karim Garcia, but advanced to first on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved Garcia to second,  a walk was issued to David Dellucci before pinch hitter Benitez drove a ball deep into the left field stands.

News and Notes - C Ben Davis made his MLB debut.
