THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Cubs 5 Padres 4 (10 innings)
For just the 3rd time all season, but twice in the month of September, the Padres lose 3 in a row.
Stan Spencer pitched okay, but left the ball game in the 6th inning, after surrendering the tying run.
After Randy Myers again couldn't close an inning without giving up a run, Tony Gwynn bailed him out with his 14th home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the 8th.
Dan Miceli kept the Cubs off the board in the 9th, but the offense was anemic again. Trevor Hoffman,in the hated closer in a non-save situation, did exactly what you thought - gave up the go ahead run on a solo home run by pinch-hitter, Gary Gaeitti.
The Padres made a little noise in their half of the 10th with Gwynn leading off with a single, then being replaced on the base paths by speedy James Mouton. Greg Vaughn struck out, then Mouton stole 2nd. With one out and Ken Caminiti at the plate, the chance of scoring the tying run seemed great. But, Rod Beck would would Caminiti in the "unintentional intentional" walk to set up Wally Joyner for the double play. Wally delivered the ground ball, but hustled down to first, just beating the throw. Carlos Hernandez, with runners on the corners, shot one right back at Beck, who kicked it with his foot, directly to SS Manny Alexander who easily threw out the lumbering Hernandez for the final out.
News and Notes - With Boehringer unavailable, and Langston not stretched out yet, Bochy went to Hoffman, even in the non-save situation.
