THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Dodgers 5 Padres 4 (10 innings)
A week after making his MLB debut, Matt Clement made his first MLB start, and with a starting lineup missing many starters, getting a breather after clinching the division last night, didn't have quite enough to get past the Dodgers on a Sunday afternoon.
Clement allowed 4 runs (3 earned) over 6 innings, and left in a tie game after allowing 2 runs to score following a throwing error by Greg Myers that extended the inning.
Down 2 early, Ruben Rivera and Andy Sheets drove in a run each in the 2nd inning to even the score.
Sheets gave the Padres the lead in the 4th with a 2 run blast, his 6th of the season.
In the 10th, off Donne Wall (5-4) , the Dodgers parlayed a single and a walk into a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bonilla for the winning run.
News and Notes - With the division wrapped up with 12 games to play, the Padres will focus on getting healthy first, setting up the pitching rotation for the playoffs second, and trying to catch up with the Astros and the Braves for the cherished home field advantage.
