THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Padres 9 Mets 8
Left fielder Greg Vaughn goes 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scored as the Padres defeat the New York Mets 9–8 at Qualcomm Stadium. Trevor Hoffman works a scoreless inning to get his 45th save, breaking the Padres’ single-season record of 44 set by Mark Davis in 1989.
The Padres needed some heroics in the 7th after a very off night from Dan Miceli resulted in a huge, 7-run inning by the Mets in the top of the 7th to take a 8-6 lead.
The first hero of the 7th was Steve Finley, batting .240, but blasted a ball to deep right field with Vaughn aboard to tie the game. The go ahead run was all thanks to Mets pitching, walking one, hitting another, then walking Quilvio Veras with the bases loaded to walk in the go-ahead run.
News and Notes - Tony Gwynn was back in the starting lineup, and was right back to being Tony - 3 for 3 with a 2B.
