THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Padres 8 Giants 3
The Padres put up some runs early (and late) and Sterling Hitchcock (9-6) worked around a Jim Leyritz error that led to 3 unearned runs, to lead to a 8-3 victory over the second place Giants.
Steve Finley led of the 1st inning with his 14th home run of the season, showing signs of life in a ho-hum offensive year for the center fielder. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Greg Vaughn hit his 48th home run of the year to score Ken Caminiti, and make the score 4-0 Padres.
With the score 4-3, the Padres answered in a large way in the 8th inning. The speed of Ruben Rivera created the first insurance run, scoring from third on a ground ball to the pitcher off the bat of Finley. With the bases loaded, Vaughn walked to score Chris Gomez, then Carlos Hernandez singled to score Finley and John Vander Wal to bring the score to 8-3.
Trevor Hoffman, who got the last out of the 8th, sent down the Giants in order to move the Padre closer to their first postseason since 1984.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 143 2001 - @Diamondbacks 8 Padres
As fate would have it, I was in Arizona for business at the same time the Padres were in town, and I was able to see Tony Gwynn play, one last time. He was given a wonderful retirement send off by a weirdly relaxed Arizona crowd.
Tony would pinch hit in the 5th inning, popping out to center.
