Tony Gwynn led off the scoring in the first for the Padres, hitting his 12th home run of the year to give the Padres an early lead.

Andy Ashby (16-7) couldn't hold it, again. Giving up 3 home runs in 5 innings, on his way to allowing all 4 runs.

The Padre offense again failed to show, getting only 5 hits, with Tony and Carlos Hernandez accounting for 2 each, and Chris Gomez getting one.




News and Notes - Brian Boehringer pitched well in relief, tossing 3 shut out innings.

Milt Pappas walked Padres pinch-hitter Larry Stahl with two out in the ninth to lose the perfect game but then retired Garry Jestadt to become the second pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Padres. Pappas struck out six as the Chicago Cubs won 8–0 at Wrigley Field.

Ryan Klesko hit a walk-off homer in the 13th and right-handed starter Brian Lawrence and five relievers combined on a seven hit shutout as the Padres defeated the Diamondbacks 1–0.



For the first time in major league history, four games end with only one run scoring in the contest. The Yankees, Padres, Astros, and Blue Jays beat their respective opponents Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Brewers, and Tigers, 1-0.
