This Date In Padre Baseball - September 26

               THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Diamondbacks 3 Padres 2

The Padres September swoon continues with yet another poor offensive performance, failing to score more the 4 runs for the 12th consecutive game.

Once again, a first run inning, this one courtesy of a Tony Gwynn home run, gave the impression that the offense was awake, but again, it was not.

The Padres put exactly one guy into scoring position until the 6th, a double from Andy Sheets in the 5th, before Steve Finley singled, and move to second on a force out. Greg Vaughn, with a much needed hit, lined one to center, scoring Finley to force a tie at two.

That lasted exactly one batter, as Matt Williams hit his 20th home run of the season leading off the 6th against starter Sterling Hitchcock (9-7)

The Padres would not get another hit until a Wally Joyner single in the 9th, but was promptly removed on a game ending line drive double play off the bat of Mark Sweeney.

News and Notes - Despite the offensive woes, getting some valuable rest leading up to the opening series, both Ken Caminiti and Carlos Hernandez are back to 100%.
