Gene Richards swipes his 50th and 51st base of the season to surpass Sonny Jackson's rookie record set with the Astros in 1966. The Friars' first baseman will establish a new freshman mark, ending the campaign with 56 thefts.

200th shutout in franchise history is recorded as Right-hander Ed Whitson allows six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete-game shutout as the Padres defeat the Astros 3–0 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. But the real excitement was in the stands as Padre president Chub Feeney flips off fan for carrying a sign that read "SCRUB CHUB" and resigns the following day.

Game 156 1971 - Astros 2 Padres 1 (21 innings) 

In one of the most incredible individual performances in Padres history, right-handed starter Clay Kirby pitches 15 innings in a 2–1, 21-inning loss to Houston in the first game of a doubleheader at San Diego Stadium. Kirby allows one run on eight hits and three walks with 15 strikeouts. Kirby sets individual Padres records that still stand for innings pitched in a game and strikeouts in an extra-inning game. 

The game remains the second-longest in Padres history by innings. The Padres and Astros play a total of 30 innings (a Padres’ record for a doubleheader) in seven hours and 40 minutes with the Padres winning the second game 5–4. Center fielder Johnny Jeter is 6-for-14 for the doubleheader with a double and a RBI.

  • OF Marshall, acquired from the Mets via a trade on November 30, 1972, appeared in 39 games during the 1973 season, hitting .286 with 0 HR and 4 RBI.
2007

Purchased Jason Lane from the Houston Astros.
  • RF Lane would go on to appear in 3 games during the 2007 season, going 0 for 2. He would be granted free agency after the season. 6 years later, he would sign with the Padres as a free agent in 2013, and appear in 3 more games in 2014, going 1 for 3.
