1998 SEASON
Padres 4 Rockies 1
The Padres end their season high 4 game losing streak by flipping the score from the previous night to win 4-1.
Matt Clement (1-0) earned his first MLB victory allowing only 1 run in 5 2/3 innings, and then watched as the bullpen got back on track, with scoreless performances by Donne Wall, Randy Myers, Dan Miceli, and a 2 strikeout 9th by Trevor Hoffman for his 51st save of the year.
Tony Gwynn singled home Chris Gomez in the 3rd inning to put the Padres on the board first. After the Rockies tied it up in the 5th, again Tony Gwynn puts the Padres back up, this time doubling home Quilvio Veras.
In a tight game, the Padres added some insurance runs, first on a double from Steve Finley to score Greg Vaughn, then scored himself on a single from pinch hitter Ruben Rivera.
Hoffman only threw 8 pitches, getting Jeff Reed to strike out on 3 pitches, Darryl Hamilton grounded out on the first pitch, then Neifi Perez was able to foul one off en route to a 4 pitch strikeout for the 51st save for #51.
News and Notes - Ken Caminiti was a late scratch due to a sore back. George Arias was 0 for 4 in his place.
