THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
Giants 5 Padres 4
With the second place Giants in town, and a chance to take Giant (pun intended) steps toward their first playoff berth in 14 years, the Padres lost the lead late, thanks to a lousy performance by Randy Myers (4-5)
Steve Finley remained hot, with an RBI double in the 1st to take an early lead. In the 5th, Ken Caminiti got out of his funk with a laser beam line drive home run to extend the lead to 2-0 Padres.
Starter Stan Spencer made his only bad pitch of the night to Jeff Kent in the 6th, leading to a 3-run bomb to give the lead to the Giants. The lead was short lived however, with Greg Myers leading off the bottom of the 6th with a home run of his own to tie the game at 3.
A pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Mark Sweeney in the bottom of the 7th, put the Padres ahead 4-3. Randy Myers gave up 2 hits, then was lifted for Dan Miceli who got Jeff Kent to pop out, but allowed a double to Ellis Burks that scored two to give the Giants the lead again.
