The Padres offense, again a shell of it's former self, had a brief resurgence in the 8th inning, with home runs from Andy Sheets and Greg Vaughn to complete the come back and earn the victory on the last game of the regular season.

Joey Hamilton was less than impressive in his last tune-up before the playoffs, tossing 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run on a home run by Travis Lee.

With the comeback, Matt Clement (2-0) earned the win and  Trevor Hoffman ties a National League record with his league-leading 53rd save in 54 opportunities. Hoffman struck out one in a perfect inning to finish the season with a 1.48 earned run average

Greg Vaughn hits his club-record 50th homer on the final day of the season to give the National League West Champion Padres a 3–2 win at Arizona. 



News and Notes - The Padres will face Houston in the first round, starting on Tuesday the 29th. Kevin Brown faces off against Randy Johnson.

Game 161 2008 - Padres 3 Pirates 2 

Trevor Hoffman records his 552nd and final save as a Padre in the 161st game of the season. It was also his 902nd and final game as a Padre. Hoffman closed his Padres career with a perfect inning in a 3–2 win over the Pirates at Petco Park. Hoffman holds the National League records for saves and appearances with a single team.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe is 2-for-4 with two home runs, driving in all seven runs as the Padres defeat the Dodgers 7–1 at Petco Park.

Third baseman Ken Caminiti is 4-for-4 including a tie-breaking, RBI single in the top of the 10th as the Padres defeat the Dodgers 5–2 at Dodger Stadium in the opener of a three-game, season-ending series to decide the National League West champion. The win puts the Padres 1 game back with 2 to play.

Released Pat Corrales.
  • C Corrales, acquired from the Reds via a trade on June 11 1972, appeared 73 games over 2 seasons, hitting .199 with 0 HR and 9 RBI.
1989

The San Diego Padres sent Freddie Toliver to the New York Yankees to complete the trade of July 22.
  • P Toliver, acquired from the Twins via a trade on June 29th, appeared in 9 games during the 1989 season, posting no decisions and a 7.07 ERA.
1994

Purchased Alan Newman from Alexandria (Texas-Louisiana).
  • P Newman would be released during spring training 1995. He would sign as a free agent again in 1997, appearing at AAA Las Vegas during the 1998 season. He would be released after the 1998 season.
