HITCHCOCK NO MATCH FOR THIN AIR

Rockies 9 Padres 5

Sterling Hitchcock (4-3) allowed 3 home runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, and still left the game with a chance at a victory, but no lead is safe at Coors field. Donne Wall surrenders a single to Greg Colbrunn, scoring both runners left on by Hitchcock to lose the lead for good.

The Padres were up 4-2 in the 3rd, thanks to Greg Vaughn's double with the bases loaded.

The Padres were unable to mount any rally in the final three innings, with a rally ended in the 9th with a game ending double play.    


News and Notes -  Ruben Rivera, filling in for a still hobbled Tony Gwynn, went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI

The Padres were represented by 1B Nate Colbert and Manager Preston Gomez. Colbert went 0 for 1, striking out against Mike Cueller in the 7th inning.

Left-hander Randy Jones is the first Padre to be in the National League starting lineup for an All-Star Game. He allows two hits and a walk with a strikeout over three scoreless innings and is credited with the win in the National League’s 7–1 victory at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

The lone Padre representative is OF Ruppert Jones, making his 2nd All Star team. Jones lead of the third with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Pete Rose.

The Padres send 11 men to the plate in a 7 run 4th inning on their way to a season high 13 runs.

P Andy Benes earned his first All Star nod, and gave up 1 run in 2 innings. Tony Gwynn went 0 for 1 in his 9th All Star appearance.

The National League was managed by the Padres's Bruce Bochy. Tony Gwynn was elected to his 15th All Star game, but couldn't play due to his knee. Andy Ashby, making his 2nd All Star team, pitched 1/3 of an inning, getting Omar Vizquel to ground out to first.

Trevor Hoffman, also making his 2nd All Star team, also pitched 1/3 of an inning, striking out Ron Coomer. Phil Nevin was selected to his 1st All Star team,but did not play.

2B Mark Loretta is selected to his 1st All Star team. The lone Padre representative goes 1 for 2.

For the second time in the 2008 season, the Padres allow 12 runs. This time at home against the Braves. Padres pitching allowed 16 hits.

1B Adrian Gonzales is selected to his 3rd All Star team, going 0 for 2. Heath Bell is added to the team when Yovani Gallardo's injury prevents him for participating. Bell pitches 1/3 of an inning.

Tim Lincecum of the Giants throws the first no-hitter in the history of Petco Park. The right-hander issues four walks and hits a batter in San Francisco’s 9–0 win. It is the eighth no-hitter thrown against the Padres.

Traded Matt Herges to the San Francisco Giants. Received Clay Hensley and cash.
  • P Herges, signed as a free agent on April 1, appeared in 40 games, posting a 2-2 record and a 2.86 ERA including 1 save.
  • P Hensley would make his MLB debut as a Padre on July 20, 2005. He would go on to appear in 106 games (40 starts) posting a 15-18 record and a 4.09 ERA including 1 complete game shutout. Granted free agency on December 12, 2008.
