1998 SEASON

The second half kicks off tomorrow with a 4 game series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. With a 5 1/2 game lead over the Giants, the Padres are hoping for a hot start to put them firmly in the rearview and concentrate on catching the Atlanta Braves for home field advantage, currently trailing by 2 games.





News and Notes -  GM Kevin Towers was quite busy during the break, but no deal to report at this time.

Game 84 1975  - Padres 8 @Cubs 6 (15 innings)

For the 3rd time in the 1975 season, the Padres go 15 innings, first by scoring 2 in the 9th to move the game to extra frames, then Fred Kendall singled home Don Hahn and Dave Winfield for the go ahead runs.

Lone Padre representative Dave Winfield drives in the go-ahead run with a ground out as the National League defeats the American League 4–2 in the All-Star Game.



Game 67 1995  - @Astros 3 Padres 2 (17 innings)

In the opening game of a double header in Houston, the Padres scored in the first, then gave the run right back...and then no one scored again until the 16th inning when Tony Gwynn doubled home Andujar Cedeno. Trevor Hoffman couldn't close it out, allowing Tony Eusebio to double home Jeff Bagwell. In the 17th inning, Brian Williams allowed a single to pitcher Doug Brocail, who then scored on a single by Craig Biggio for the walk off loss.

In a low scoring affair, voted in All-Stars Ken Caminiti and Tony Gwynn go hitless, as does manager selected Steve Finley.




Game 92 2018  - Padres 4 @Diamondbacks 3 (16 innings)

A day after being shellacked 20-5, the Padres get a much needed victory with a Wil Myers home run off Jeff Mathis in the 16th inning.

Game 83 1976 - Padres 6 @Cubs 3

Left-hander Randy Jones sets a National League record by posting his 16th win before the All-Star break in a 6–3 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Jones is 16–3 with a 2.53 earned run average.

Transactions of July 8



1999

Traded Juan Melo to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Isabel Giron (minors).
  • 2B Melo was signed as an amateur free agent on June 15, 1993. Never made an appearance at the big league level.
  • P Giron would rise to AAA Portland, but be released in 2001.
2005

Selected Luis Mendoza off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
  • P Mendoza would go on to appear for Lake Elsinore Storm before being waived and selected back by the Red Sox on July 27.
2009

Received Yamid Haad from the Seattle Mariners as part of a conditional deal.
  • C Haad appeared at AAA Portland before being granted free agency after the 2009 season.
