Joey Hamilton (9-9) dominated the Diamondbacks over 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 10. Trevor Hoffman picked up his 32nd consecutive save with an easy 9th.
The Padres needed Hamilton to be solid too, as hits were not too prevalent on the Friar side either. Arizona starter Brian Anderson (7-9) only allowed 6 hits, but 4 of them came in the 3rd inning, with Andy Sheets and Quilvio Veras singling in a run each. The Padres 3rd run came on a solo home run from Ken Caminiti in the 4th inning.

- SP Workman was drafted by the Padres in the 3rd round of the 1996 draft and rose to High A level Rancho Cucamonga at the time of the trade.
- P Bruske would go on to appear in 4 games in the 1998 season before being traded to the Yankees on August 23. Formerly signed as a free agent in 1997, totalling 30 appearance over both seasons, posting a 4-1 record and a 3.66 ERA.
