Joey Hamilton was roughed up for 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. but was saved by a Padre rally in the 7th.
Down 6-2 and facing a dominant Al Leiter, currently atop the ERA leader board at 2.16, the Padres once again found a way to battle back.
Andy Sheets and Tony Gwynn would single in the 7th to knock Leiter out of the game and get to the soft middle relievers for the Mets. Greg Vaughn would single home sheets, and then Jim Leyritz would draw a walk off Greg McMichael to load the bases, and manager Bobby Valentine had seen enough. Calling on Mel Rojas to clean up the mess.
Wally Joyner would draw a full count walk to score Gywnn, and make the score 6-4. After coercing Steve Finley to pop up to second, pinch hitter Greg Myers would double off the wall to tie the game at 6. Mark Sweeney couldn't continue the rally, making a very loud out to right.
Donne Wall (4-3) would allow a two-out Luis Lopez double to score the go ahead run in the bottom of the 7th.
John Franco would allow 2 baserunners in the 9th, but induce a game ending double play.
