A pair of 3-run home runs, first Joyner in the 1st, and the Vaughn in the 3rd, put Andy Ashby (14-5) and the Padres up big early, and Ashby cruised from there.
Throwing 6 innings, allowing 1 solo home run, Ashby was effective, but far from his regular performance. Scott Sanders gave up 2 unearned runs thanks to a Chris Gomez error and 2 wild pitches.
Up 6-3 in the 8th, the Padres added 3 more. First on a single from Chris Gomez to score Mark Sweeney. Then Steve Finley doubled home Carlos Hernandez and Gomez.
