BROWN WINS 12TH
PADRES 6 CARDINALS 3
Kevin Brown (12-3) goes 8 strong, striking out 9, and Trevor Hoffman secures his 31st consecutive save of the year in a 6-3 win at the Q.
Quilvio Veras got the Padres started early, leading off the bottom of the 1st with a home run. A Carlos Hernandez passed ball allowed the Cardinals to tie the game in the 2nd.
But that lead would be short lived, the Padres would get 2 unearned run from 2 Cardinals errors. First 3B John Mabry misplayed a Ruben Rivera grounder that allowed Jim Leyritz to score, and later score himself after a wild throw during a sacrifice attempt.
In the 5th, the Padres would add 2 more, thanks to RBI singles from Ken Caminiti and Ruben Rivera.
Brown ran into a little trouble in the 6th, allowing a lead off single by Royce Clayton, and then was visibly angry on the mound after Brian Jordan drove one deep into the crowd in right field for a 2 run home run.
Tony Gwynn would add the final run of the night, driving in Chris Gomez with a single in the 6th.
News and Notes - Steve Finley appeared defensively in the 8th after missing the last 2 games with a stomach bug.
