Trevor Hoffman gets the save in the Padres 4–1 over the Dodgers, who are managed by his brother Glenn Hoffman. The game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles marks the first time in Major League history that a player plays against a team managed by his brother.

Andy Ashby won his 12th game, pitching 8 strong innings, allowing 4 hits and only one run on a home run by Eric Karros.

Padres scored early with a little help from an error by Adrian Beltre on a wild throw on a Wally Joyner ground ball, leading to 2 runs in the first.

Steve Finley and Joyner would each add another RBI later in the game for the Padres.


News and Notes - Tony Gwynn was lifted late in the game, his knee bothering him again.

The Padres host their first All-Star Game at San Diego Stadium. The National League wins 7–3 and Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey is named the Most Valuable Player. Dave Winfield of the Padres is 1-for-2 and scores a run. Right-hander Rollie Fingers of the Padres allows a hit in two scoreless innings.

Released Matty Alou.
  • OF Alou appeared in 48 games during the 1974 season, hitting .198 with 0 HR and 3 RBI, after being purchased from the St. Louis Cardinals on October 25, 1973. 
1990

Traded Alex Cole to the Cleveland Indians. Received Tom Lampkin.
  • CF Cole was at AAA Las Vegas when traded. Would make his MLB debut as an Indian on July 27, 1990. Originally acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals via a trade on February 27, 1990.
  • C Lampkin would appear in 177 games in four seasons (1990-1992,2002), hitting .215 with 11 HR and 44 RBI. Purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers on March 25, 1993, he would return in 2002 via a trade with the Seattle Mariners.
