THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

ASHBY CRUISES TO WIN #11

PADRES 7 ROCKIES 2

Left fielder Greg Vaughn hits two homers and a triple for three RBIs in a 7–2 Padres win over Colorado at Qualcomm Stadium.

Vaughn now has 30 home runs on the season.

But Andy Ashby (11-5) was the story today. His complete game only took 75 pitches, as he was always near the zone, but not quite in it. The Rockies has 8 at bats of only 1 pitch, all but 1 were outs. The lone exception was a John VanderWal home run in the 9th.

Vaughn provided early offense, tripling home Ken Caminiti for the first run of the game. He would homer to lead off the 4th to put the Padres ahead 2-1.

Carlos Hernandez would put the game out of reach with a 3 run home run in the 6th. Ashby would add an insurance run of his own, doubling in Chris Gomez to make it 6-1.

Vaughn's second home run of the night was a solo shot in the 7th inning.

News and Notes - Vaughn's 30 HR are already tied for 8th most in a Padres season.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 88 2019  - Padres 3 @Dodgers 2

Dodger Stadium was rolled by a 7.1 earthquake and then rocked by a Hunter Renfroe home run in the 8th inning off Yimi Garcia.

.

Matthew and I had some great seats, but they were up a level, so that earthquake was a bit intense on that level as we swayed and tried to figure out exactly what to do . We stood up and readied ourselves to leave through the exit that was quite close to us. Fortunately, the rolling didn't turn into anything more dramatic. The players didn't even notice, but that foul pole swayed for a good 15 minutes!
