THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

HOFFMAN STREAK ENDS, BUT PADRES RALLY FOR VICTORY

PADRES 6 ASTROS 5

Trevor Hoffman’s franchise-record streak of 41 straight converted saves ends on Moises Alou homer. The Padres defeat Houston 5–4 in the bottom of the 10th.

Kevin Brown pitched another strong 8 innings, striking out 10 before handing the ball over to Trevor Hoffman, who was rudely greeted by Moises Alou with the first pitch in the 9th, ending his consecutive save streak.

With 2 outs in the 10th, Ruben Rivera would double off the wall, missing a game winning home run by a few inches. Carlos Hernandez would be intentionally walked to set up the force at every base. Struggling Andy Sheets then sharply singled to left and Rivera would beat the throw home for the walk off victory.

News and Notes - The comeback win allows the Padres to remain tied with the Braves for the best record in the NL.
