THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

HELL'S BELLS DEBUT

PADRES 6 ASTROS 5

A back and forth battle ended with the introduction of the greatest entrance music for a closer in baseball history - AC/DC’s “Hells Bells” is played to accompany closer Trevor Hoffman’s entry for the first time — leading up to Hoffman converting his 41st straight save. At the time, the streak shares the Major League record for longest run of saves without a blown opportunity.

The game was a sloppy one with 3 errors by Houston and 2 by the Padres. Mark Langston (4-3) fought through 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Newly acquired Jim Bruske made his Padre debut, allowing one run, then Scott Sanders and Dan Miceli kept the Astros at 5 runs, setting up an iconic moment in Padre history.

News and Notes - Greg Myers brought up, Archi Cianfrocco sent down. Jim Bruske recalled, Roberto Ramirez optioned.

1972 ALL STAR GAME -  NATIONAL 4 AMERICAN 3

Padres first baseman Nate Colbert walks as a pinch-hitter and scores on a single by Reds’ second baseman Joe Morgan in the 10th inning to give the National League a 4–3, walk-off win in the All-Star Game in Atlanta.
Nate Colbert brought the wrong uniform with him to Atlanta. The San Diego Padres' slugger donned his road jersey with SAN DIEGO on it instead of his home one with PADRES on it. Both of San Diego's jerseys in 1972 were gold.

Game 102 1974- @Braves 1 Padres 0 (10 innings)

Atlanta scores a walk-off run in the 10th to defeat the Padres 1–0 in the quickest extra-inning game in Padres history — two hours and 17 minutes.

Game 99 1975 - Padres 7 @Braves 3
Game 100 1975 - Padres 8 @Braves 1

Padres sweep doubleheader in Atlanta to start a small 5 game winning streak,  which is the best the Padres would do in 1975.

Game 100 1978 - Padres 2 Pirates 1

Losers of 7 of their last 10, the 4th place Padres seemed destined for another 90 loss season. But on this date, The Padres would start a season high 10 game win streak, that took the team above .500, where they would stay all season to complete the first ever winning season in franchise history (84-78)

Game 94 1990 - Padres 2 Reds 1
Game 95 1990 - Padres 10 Reds 4

The Padres swept a doubleheader, but no one remembers that...the only remember this travesty:
Roseanne Barr sang the National Anthem between Padres games 20 ...

Game 98 2009 - @Nationals 13 Padres 1

Padres give up 16 hits and allow a season high 13 runs.

GAME OF THE DATE

Game 103 1979 - Expos 6 Padres 5

This is the first game I can remember going to. My mom won tickets for my t-ball team. I remember waiting for Ozzie Smith to sign my glove.

I don't recall any details about the game itself, but I remember the sounds and smell of the ballpark.

The Padres score 4 in the first, and slowly but surely give the game back to the Expos, with Bob Owchinko and Eric Rasmussen blowing the lead and allowing 2 runs to score in the 9th on a double by Tony Perez.
