1998 SEASON
HITCHCOCK IS NO MATCH FOR THE GAMBLER
A'S 7 PADRES 2
Sterling Hitchcock (4-2) had his worst outing of the year, blowing an early 2 run lead and came undone as Kenny Rogers (8-3) settled into a complete game victory.
Hitchcock gave up a season high 7 runs on 10 hits, also a season high, with most of the damage coming in the 6th and 7th inning.
Up 2-0 early, thanks to Jim Leyritz's first home run as a Padre, scoring Greg Vaughn, Hitchcock looked locked and loaded. Allowing only 3 runs through 4 innings, it appeared a pitcher's duel was in the works.
Rogers held up his end, striking out only 4 Padres, but sprinkling 4 hits over the final 7 innings to prevent any more runs from scoring.
The momentum turning blow was provided by Miguel Tejada, who lofted a ball to deep right for a 3 run home run and a 3 run lead in the 6th.
News and Notes - Bruce Bochy dropped Steve Finley down the lineup, to the 7th spot to spark some offense. 0 for 2, with a walk and a sacrifice don't look great in the boxscore, but he is seeing the ball better.
